General Questions – 401(k) Calculator
What does this 401(k) calculator do?
Our calculator helps you estimate your retirement savings growth by projecting contributions, employer matches, investment returns, and inflation over time.
How accurate are the projections?
Results are estimates based on your inputs. Actual returns may vary due to market conditions and life changes. We recommend reviewing annually.
Contribution Questions
What’s the maximum I can contribute to my 401(k)?
For 2024, the IRS limit is $23,000 ($30,500 if 50+). Our calculator automatically flags when contributions approach IRS limits.
How does employer matching work?
Employers often match a percentage of your contributions (e.g., 50% of your first 6% salary). The calculator shows how to maximize this “free money.”
Withdrawal Questions
What penalties apply for early withdrawals?
Withdrawals before age 59½ typically incur a 10% penalty plus income taxes. The Early Withdrawal tab calculates these costs.
How much can I safely withdraw in retirement?
We use the 4% rule (withdrawing 4% annually) as a baseline, but you can adjust this in the calculator.
Technical Questions
Does this calculator store my personal data?
No. All calculations happen in your browser, we never save your salary, balance, or other sensitive information.
Can I use this for Roth 401(k) accounts?
Yes. While designed for traditional 401(k)s, you can adapt it by setting future tax rates to 0% for Roth accounts.
